The home owners of this beautiful American Colonial home in Waterford, Virginia requested that we create curved wrought iron railings for their brick front entry steps. They desired a style of railing that would compliment their home and also increase safety of the steps. The home owners were inspired by one of Antietam Iron Works curved monkeys tail designs. The design included rope twists on each picket, and a genuine gold leaf detail added to the finials and hand forged balls.
A coat of sizing is applied as an adhesive for the gold leaf.
23.75 Karat Gold Leaf was gilded over the finials and the mid-line ball that were forged in the pickets
This colonial home is in the processes of being beautifully restored to its stately elegance in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. No colonial home is complete with out wrought iron touches. Antietam Iron Works in keeping with this goal created these wrought iron gates in the traditional hairpin design. The gates grace and protect the front entry walk and courtyard. The result is pleasing and eye catching.
Spring latches allow for easy entry through areas where a home owner may pass encumbered by groceries or belonging, but is secure enough to not remain closed when desired.
Antietam Iron Works creates custom wrought iron gates to our clients needs. Each one is hand crafted in Pennsylvania. Explore our Gallery to discover more of our work.
Fireplace screens and doors add to the beauty and safety of a hearth. This home owner’s goal was to maintain an open feeling through this gas fireplace. A design was chosen with a natural branch appearance.
Then each element of this wrought iron screen was hammered and a darkening custom oil-rubbed finish was incorporated to give it its light catching aspect.
Antietam Iron Works fire place doors are often filled with heat tolerant glass or metal screen. The Custom Fire place Door project to the left was created with glass. Additionally, below you’ll find fire place doors that were custom made to incorporated metal screen.

This is a rustic home with details that gives it warmth and style. Creatively built by RH Bunch Construction, Antietam Iron Works was asked to create these custom post and newel caps using copper that was aged with a darkening patina. Coat racks and counter brackets to support a wood slab were also fabricated to match the style of this home.
These railings provide safety and beauty for a second floor open hallway that overlooks from both sides the foyer and dining rooms of this home. Creating a wonderful open and connected space and allowing light to travel throughout the home. The home owner wanted a railing that would be artistic and yet have a natural feeling for his home in the Pennsylvania mountains. He trusted James Gunnell’s artistic eye and gave him the freedom to build these railings to create the impression of tree branches.
Antietam Iron Works custom forged metal railings for this mountain cabin. A strong look was required rather than scrolling elegance. We used heavier materials and forged a mid line ball into alternating pickets. The project was powder coated oil rubbed bronze to protect it from the elements. The railing created a great contrasting look between these wooden porch posts.
