Exterior Metal Railings

Historic Railing Restoration- Franklin County Visitors Center

In 2023 the Franklin County Visitors Center contracted Antietam Iron Works to remove and restore their front main entrance railings while keeping their historic design as part of an Impact Grant. Working with a local contractor who repaired the marble, Antietam Iron Works was able to successfully restore and re-install these railings. As part of the restoration, the original bronze rail cap was removed and cleaned. We were careful not to alter the age-old patina of the original bronze rail cap. The original bronze finials were lost over the years, so one of the fun challenges was finding something as a replacement. New bronze is shiny and contrasts harshly with aged bronze and would take years to match the original patina. We were able to speed up the process by creating a chemical reaction with the bronze on the new finials shortening the years long process to about one week. The railings now add safety and beauty to the front entrance of the Visitors Center. It awaits many to come discover all that Franklin County has to offer.

Freezing temperatures, time, and salt or other ice prevention treatments will corrode the finish on railings and the metal itself.
